Jolle: A Cradle That Marries Tradition with Modern Design

Designed by Lisa Vesely and Christian Leidinger, Jolle is a testament to sustainable, health-focused, and aesthetically pleasing design.

Inspired by the cradle-to-cradle principle, the health benefits of stone pine, and a modern, timeless aesthetic, Lisa Vesely and Christian Leidinger have created Jolle, a baby cradle that seamlessly blends tradition with innovation. This article explores the unique properties, production process, and design specifications of Jolle, highlighting its significance in the realm of sustainable and health-conscious design.

Designed and produced in Austria, Jolle stands out due to its unique combination of health and sustainability aspects with traditional craft and modern design. The cradle is made from stone pine, a wood known for its essential oils that promote a soothing sleep for babies. A study by Joanneum Research suggests that sleeping in a stone pine bed can save up to 3500 heartbeats, equivalent to an hour of cardiac performance. This health benefit, coupled with Jolle's modern design, makes it a unique addition to any nursery.

The production process of Jolle is a blend of technology and traditional craftsmanship. Produced in a carpentry in Vorarlberg, Austria, the cradle relies heavily on CNC technology for its production, especially for the creation of its skids, which require a precise curve for smooth swinging. However, all other work, including preparation, assembly, and finishing, is done by hand, ensuring a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Jolle's design specifications further highlight its commitment to sustainability and health. The cradle consists of a wooden bed box, skids, a felt cover, and a mattress, all made from natural materials and free of metal or synthetic substances. The cradle, including the felt cover, measures 936 x 760 x 875 mm, while the mattress measures 900 x 400 mm. The skids and bed are made from 100% untreated Austrian stone pine, while the cover is made from felt, and the mattress is a combination of coco mat, sheep wool, and linen.

Not only is Jolle a sustainable and health-conscious product, but it also boasts a modern, elegant design inspired by Scandinavian aesthetics. The curved skids add an elegant touch, while the straight lines and simple forms create a calm, modern look. The cradle is built to last and is intended to be passed on from one generation to the next, further emphasizing its sustainability. Jolle's design, therefore, is a perfect blend of sustainability and modern elegance.

Jolle's design process was not without its challenges. The team had to find the perfect curve for the rocking skids and create joints between the bed-box and the skids that did not require any metal or synthetic material. However, these challenges were overcome, resulting in a product that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also sustainable and health-conscious. Jolle's design was recognized with a Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2017, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.

In conclusion, Jolle is a unique cradle that successfully combines tradition with modern design. Its use of stone pine, a material known for its health benefits, and its commitment to sustainability make it a standout product in the realm of nursery furniture. With its elegant design and health-conscious features, Jolle is a testament to the power of innovative design in improving our everyday lives.
